GSM - AN OVERVIEW

GSM is the most important technologies used for mobile telephone networks
The first GSM network was rolled out during the early nineties.Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) is developed in the working groups associated to European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
Lets not go deeper into the history and theories and discuss some technical stuff about it.

  • FUNCTIONAL VIEW:
The primary goal of a mobile telephone network that a subscriber
having a mobile telephone can make and receive calls anywhere. To achieve this
goal, some major functions are required.
  1. Call management and call processing - it includes all the processes during call setup and call release
  2. Radio management - issues related to communication path and frequencies
  3. Mobility management - the network should be aware of the location of a user to avoid unnescesary                                                    network load and operations
  4. Charging - related to billing and registration (as billing depends also upon user location)
  5. Security  -  various encryption and authentication techniques.

  • LOGICAL VIEW:
The GSM networks are divided into two logical parts:
  1. Network Switching Sub-system (NSS) - It is responsible for call processing, mobility management, and subscriber related functions such as charging and security
  2. Base Station Subsystem (BSS) - It performs the radio related functions towards the Mobile Stations (MS), e.g. a mobile phone.
